Have you checked that the product is good quality and not poorly made? Have you inspected the device for wear and tear or damage (wheels, brakes, bearings, boards, shells, laces/buckles)? For scooters – are the brakes working, steering secure, and handlebars/grips safe and at the right height? For skateboards – are the wheels, trucks, bearings, grip tape, and board all in good condition? For rollerblades/skates – are the wheels, bearings, brakes, shells, laces and buckles in good condition? Protective Gear Is your child wearing a helmet that meets Australian Standards (AS/NZS 2063)? Are they wearing wrist, elbow, and knee guards for extra protection? Is the protective gear correctly fitted and secure? Safe Riding Habits Has your child practiced riding in a safe place (flat area, away from roads, driveways, and slopes)? Does your child ride on footpaths and shared paths safely (keeping left, giving way to pedestrians)? Are they aware of others around them, especially when crossing driveways or near car parks and busy roads? Have you chosen safe spaces for your child, such as skate parks or designated riding areas? Do you remind your child never to ride on the road or at night? Supervision & Independence If your child under 9 years old, are they riding with adult supervision? If your child is riding independently, are they responsible, aware of risks, and following safety rules? Motorised & Powered Devices • Have you checked your local rules about e-scooters and other powered rideables (minimum age is usually 16 years)? Does the helmet fit snugly with the chinstrap securely fastened and sitting level and low on the child’s head? Have you checked the bike’s brakes, tyres, chain, and pedals to make sure they are in good working order? Are the bell, lights, and reflectors working and visible? Is the seat adjusted to the correct height for your child? Are the handlebar grips intact and covering the ends? Safe Riding Habits Does your child always wear their helmet when riding? Is your child wearing bright or reflective clothing so they can be seen easily? Have they practiced riding in a safe area (park, footpath, driveway away from traffic) before riding near roads? Does your child know to keep left, look out for others, and give way to pedestrians? Does your child ride in a predictable way (no sudden swerves or unsafe tricks near others)? Safe Road Use If your child is under 10, are they riding with an adult at all times? If your child is under 12, are they riding on the footpath where it is safer? If your child is over 10 and riding independently, do they know and follow the basic road rules? Can your child safely check for traffic before crossing roads or driveways? Have you planned and agreed on the safest route together (quiet streets, bike paths, or shared paths – avoiding busy roads)? Ongoing Safety Practices Do you regularly check your child’s bike and helmet for damage or wear? Have you replaced your child’s helmet if it is older than 3–5 years, damaged, or outgrown? Are you continuing to give your child supervised practice to build their confidence and skills? Are you encouraging your child to ride respectfully and safely around others?
